“Who else hooked up at BAVC?”

May 22, 2007

Mindy Aronoff, Director of Training and Resources

Mike was referring to himself and Abby, both alumni (he scheduled postproduction clients and she was wrote grants), who are now leaving the city together to explore the south east coast of America. There’s something…well…unique about working at BAVC. We often act like nonprofit refugees, wistfully crabbing about more money and about the database we so desperately need and we’re so used to work-arounds that we become ridiculously giddy when the HVAC is fixed. We’re like the mom that lifts the car off her kid under pressure and then looks around to say, I did that?

The Little Mother

Over the years I’ve watched interns and colleagues learn, then leave and go on to live out their dreams. Kacey works at HBO, now. Samantha went to Uth TV. Ted started Poketo with Angie. Mike and Scott took a time out from Court & Spark to begin Hiss Golden Messenger. Scott P is a motion designer. Robert went to Pixar and so did Luis. JoJo went to The Orphanage and Brent edits at ILM. Dave’s there, too. Eamon got an MFA at UCLA. Gina did the same thinPhoto courtesy of Erica Simoneg at Irvine. Janel got her Master’s in library science while surfin’ in Hawaii and Serene is a reporter for Frontline/World. Michael’s getting his grad degree in cinemastudies at NYU. Tati’s going this summer. Laura makes art in Brooklyn. Carl’s doing something he won’t let me link you to. Mark’s a lead producer at Current TV. James is directing a feature film, Michella got her Master’s in digital arts at UCSC. Paige is building a home in San Miguel de Allende and Shauna hopes to start a nonprof in Mexico City. Sally funds indies, Melanin writes and makes art. Janet writes on deadline. David runs Video Arts and Steve curates at PFA. Beth made a doc. Texas moved to Australia and David’s program director at Expression. Tamara made a doc and Anne’s a shooter in LA. Amy is an editor in Colorado and Grace works at WETA in NewZealand. There are so many more. Thirty years’ worth, in fact. We’re gonna celebrate this year and we’re connecting in completely new ways. It’s a small, brilliant pool and sometimes we do the impossible and sometimes we help someone get where they’re going. And sometimes we just get excited when the HVAC is fixed.
