Words You Can Use: The BAVC BLOG

I really, really wanted to write something smart about Macworld but what can you say about the ubiquitous black t-shirt, grown white men sportin’ pony tails and bright orange iPod covers that hasn’t already been said? Really, the coolest thing that came from this year’s Macworld was Steve Bayes, who had just recently come back from the Editors Retreat in Puerto Vallarta looking enviously well rested, and who came for a tour of BAVC before he hit Moscone for his mini-keynote on Friday afternoon. I didn’t know much about Steve before that, except that he’s the PM for Final Cut Pro and Color, but our Training & Resources Curriculum Strategist Carl Weichert got a nerd-on when I mentioned he was visiting us, so, sure, I googled him and purty durn quick I figured out that Steve is The Guy That Set Avid on the Certification Course, among a ton of other ground breaking achievements and in a daring feat of mastery, jumped over to Apple two years ago.

Actually, it was George Mauro who intro’d Steve to us. George and Steve know each other from years of editing in Boston and luckily for us they stayed in touch, taking turns poking fun of themselves and reminiscing about why wearing a tie to work isn’t optimal for editors on a Sony 1” BVH-1100 (we have one on display in our lobby).

Steve, a fair-skinned, fresh-faced redhead, lived up to the gossip I’d heard about him: super nice, super brainy. What I wasn’t ready for was how handsome this man dresses. He had the coolest sports jacket on that stopped me cold in my tracks. I can’t even remember exactly what it was—dark black suede? Velvet? …but just from the cuffs up to about 8 inches and then some really nice woven fabric. Pants. A soft, drape-y shirt. I don’t know. Maybe he’ll wear it for you one day and you’ll see what I mean. Here’s what I can tell you; after NAB is over, Steve is going to give a presentation on codecs and formats for BAVC members. Look for it in April and bring something to write on cuz compression never looked so sexy and you’re gonna walk away a whole world smarter.
