ROHSTOFF [raw material] – BAVC’s New Exhibition Series
March 21, 2008
by Dannie Delvos, BAVC Education Recruiter
If you have visited BAVC’s facility lately, you might have noticed some changes in the hallways: new lighting, new paint, and, most importantly, new photographs. BAVC’s new gallery ROHSTOFF [raw material] has opened its doors and was kicked off with a big bang — a shoot-out between the leading photo-editing applications Lightroom and Aperture. However, the tools had to take a back seat when it came to the stars of the night: the artists Brent Bowers, Liz Hickok, Michael Mages, and Michele Sieglitz.
So, what is ROHSTOFF [raw material] and why does BAVC have a gallery, you might ask?
Rohstoff is German for “raw material” – the stuff big things are made of. BAVC’s exhibition series features emerging and established artists, whose work is mostly experimental, often innovative, sometimes controversial, and always thought-provoking.
BAVC’s community surges with artistic talent, and creative potential comes through our doors on a daily basis – students, media makers, instructors, and staff. ROHSTOFF [raw material] provides an outlet for those who are ready to show their artwork. It simultaneously gives inspiration to other members of the community, and last but not least, makes our hallways look so much better.
The opening night attracted a number of local art lovers, including Alan Bamberger, whom you might know from his blog www.artbusiness.com. SF Weekly writer Hiya Swanhuyser also visited the gallery, and made sure to include the event in SF Weekly’s calendar listings. And the night wouldn’t have been complete without drawing a lucky winner of Adobe’s generous Lightroom donation. Make sure to check out pictures on our flickr site.
Even if you missed the opening event, you can still see the artwork during BAVC’s regular business hours until March 31, 2008.
The next show is already in the works with local video and music artists including Nate Boyce, Brook Hinton, Sade Huron, Rebeca Bollinger and Anthony Discenza. The opening event for the next show is on May 15, 2008 – so save the date! We’ll be presenting work around the theme “Site Specific.” More details to follow – especially about the live opening night performance.
